Warrant Canary Notice

This Warrant Canary Notice was last updated on February 9, 2018.

United States law provides for, in certain instances, secret warrants, administrative subpoenas, and/or searches and seizures of data, such as library records.  These laws provide for criminal penalties for revealing the warrant, search or seizure, to any parties (other than, in some cases, legal counsel).  Because we are a fully transparent organization, we publish a warrant canary notice to inform our users information about whether we have ever been served with such a warrant.

BTRIC, our Trustees, and our employees will in fact comply with such warrants and their provisions for secrecy, subject to the advice of our legal counsel (if disclosure to counsel is permissible).

BTRIC will also make available our Warrant Canary Notices in the form of a cryptographically signed message containing the following:

  • the date of publication and a deadline for the publication of the next notice;
  • a declaration that, up to that point, no warrants have been served, nor have any searches or seizures taken place; and
  • a cut and paste headline from a major news source, providing proof that the notice itself could not have been produced in advance of the date that the news article was published.

Special note should be taken if these messages ever cease being updated, or are removed from this page.

The following “go.btric.org” redirect URLs will always resolve to our most recent Warrant Canary Notice and a third-party, reliable keyserver hosting the PGP public key used to sign the notice (with the email address of security@btric.org):
